I’m taking a break from fiction. The literary type anyway.
I’ve been disappointed too many times lately. I think I’ve found Mr./Mrs. Right, and it doesn’t work out.
The Violent Bear it Away was fantastic, but Flannery O’Connor’s career was far too short, and there’s just no future in the relationship. Ditto for The Great Gatsby. Suttree and All the Pretty Horses blew me away, but I’m afraid to commit to Cormac McCarthy, because I know his violent, grim vision will ultimately wear me down.
As with all people who have difficulty remaining in a committed relationship, I know I am as much to blame as my partner. Any novel I read now will just be a rebounder. So I’m sticking with non-fiction. And I think I’ve made a good selection: The Forever War by Dexter Filkins. This could be the start of something special…
