In addition to voting for a Democrat for president for the first time since 1992, 2008 marks the year that I try a non-Windows operating system. Ironically, it was probably about 1992 that I last used a non-Windows OS. Then it was Novell. Now Linux.
I got a hold of an old Dell Latitude with a Pentium III and 128 MB RAM and am installing Ubuntu Linux 8.04 even as I write.
One problem: My first attempt was thwarted by the following error: “buffer i o error on device fd0 logical block 0″ I noticed a few users with Dells reporting the same problem. It may be an issue of insufficient RAM. I tried downloading the alternative text-only install and it appears to be working
